How do I write an article?

First you have to join up as a Cit J, if you haven’t done that already.
Once you have logged in head on over to File a Story, in the top right hand of the navigation bar.

File a Story

Choose a category that best fits your story - news, sport, business, entertainment, technology or lifestyle. Opinion comes into all of them and is welcome at the norg.

Next step choose story type - if it’s a text story without a main picture hit “Article”.

story type

Type the story, write a blurb* (or hit auto blurb if you wish) and then publish. Simple.

auto blurb
*A blurb is a short summary of the article in 250 words or less.

How do I file a photo?

So have a great photo - or image - you want to share, or you would like to add an image to your story, then you’ll want to file it as a photo. First step is to upload the image to a photo-sharing site - we love Flickr, but any will do - and then you need the URL for where the image is hosted. If you drag the image into your browser you will get the URL - it should end in .jpg.

Choose a category as above, then choose “Photo” for story type and add the details - using the image URL. You can also write a story to go along with your photo. Make sure you have permission to use any images you upload to the site. There are many photos distributed through creative commons that you can use, but always check the terms.

How do I file a video?

Come across a cool video on YouTube? Or maybe you have some footage you have uploaded there and you want to share it. You can embed a YouTube by grabbing the URL (NOTE: not the embed html).

youtube url

This will embed the video on the Norg you can also write a story to go along with it.

How do I file audio?

Like photos these need to be hosted elsewhere, but if you find a great Podcast then choose a category as above and then “audio” as story type - link to the MP3 file and away you go. You can also write a story to go along with it.

How do I file a Webpage link?

If you some across an article on another site that is worth pointing out, DON”T copy and paste it into the Norg - that is breach of copyright!
You can either make a comment and quote the story and file it as an article, or you can create a link to the original story with a short blurb summarizing what it’s about. Choose a category and then choose webpage link and put in the details. The system automatically generates a link to the article.

I need to edit something I have posted, help

No doubt you hit publish and immediately see all your typos. Don’t panic! If you go to File a Story again you will see your last five story headings in the right hand corner. Hit on the title and you can re-edit and refile. Check that the category and story type remain the same as the original one you filed. If you want to edit an older story you can hit “View all your stories” and use the “edit” button under the story.

I have forgotten my password

Not a problem, we can send you another one from the Login page. If you are still having problems you can email us at help@norg.com.au

I’m finding content offensive

There is a report button on all stories and comments, hit it only if you really feel that something is truly offensive or could possibly be illegal.

Don’t hit “report” just because you disagree with something.

How does voting work?

First off, you need to be logged in to vote. Voting works on a 24 hour news cycle to keep the news fresh and up-to-date. A story’s votes halve after 24 hours until you see that they reduce to 1, fresher stories get priority over older news when it drops down to one as well.
You can see a stories votes in the little blue box.

What are Cit J rankings?

When you join up you are a cadet journalist as you make a contribution to the site your ranking increases and so does your vote. Cadets to CitJ 2 have 1 vote, CitJ 3- CitJ 5 have 2 votes and CitJ 6 to Senior Cit J have 3 votes. The system is built not to reward people who continually upload spam or stories that continually get low votes. You can see all the rankings here. These are rankings reflected across all our sites.

Um, those are the basics - but if you have any other questions please email us at help@norg.com and we will answer your questions and add it to the help section.

Happy Norging!
